Dolpa

Crystal Mountain, Bon culture and the epic trek through Shey Phoksundo

Dolpa holds Shey Phoksundo Lake, Nepal's deepest lake, its turquoise water set inside Shey Phoksundo National Park in the remote Upper Dolpo region.

Upper Dolpo remains one of Nepal's most isolated inhabited areas, home to Tibetan Buddhist and Bon communities and requiring a restricted-area permit to visit.

The Phoksundo Gorge, among Nepal's deepest river gorges, adds a dramatic natural counterpart to the district's high-altitude lake and monastery culture.

People & Culture

Upper Dolpo is one of the few places in Nepal where communities practise Bon, the pre-Buddhist religion of Tibet, alongside Tibetan Buddhism, both visible in the region's monasteries and prayer walls. The area's isolation, reachable only by multi-day trek and gated by a restricted-area permit, has preserved a way of life closely tied to the Tibetan plateau rather than the Nepali mid-hills further south.
