Shey Phoksundo Lake

Nepal's deepest and most magnificent alpine lake

Shey Phoksundo Lake is Nepal's deepest lake and one of its most breathtakingly beautiful, located in Shey Phoksundo National Park in Dolpa District at an altitude of 3,611 metres. The lake's extraordinary turquoise and cobalt blue waters, set against barren brown cliffs and the snowy peaks of the Trans-Himalaya, create a scene of almost surreal beauty. The lake is sacred in the Bon (Tibet's pre-Buddhist religion) tradition and is approached via a dramatic trek through the gorge of the Phoksundo River. The ancient Ringmo village on the lake's shore preserves one of the last living Bon communities in the world.
