Sarpang District

Subtropical southern district bordering India

Sarpang District sits in Bhutan's subtropical southern foothills bordering India, its lower elevation and warmer climate setting it apart from the alpine valleys further north. Gelephu, the district's main town, is a growing border and commercial centre, while Sarpang town itself serves the surrounding farming villages.

Well south of Trongsa and the higher Central Bhutan valleys, Sarpang forms part of the country's emerging southern development corridor.

Culture

People & Culture

Sarpang's population includes a significant Lhotshampa (ethnic Nepali) community alongside hill migrants, giving the district a more ethnically mixed character than the Buddhist highland valleys further north. Rice, maize and fruit farming dominate the local economy, supported by the district's warmer, wetter climate.
