Trongsa District
Ancestral home of Bhutan's royal family
Trongsa District holds the ancestral seat of Bhutan's royal family, Trongsa Dzong, the largest dzong in the country, built above a gorge on the Mangde River. Bhutan's first two kings ruled from Trongsa before the capital moved to Thimphu, and the crown prince traditionally serves as Trongsa's governor before ascending the throne.
Sitting midway along the east-west highway, Trongsa is the natural crossing point between Bumthang and the rest of Central Bhutan.

Trongsa's identity is inseparable from Bhutan's royal history: the Ta Dzong watchtower above the main dzong now houses a museum dedicated to the monarchy, and Kuenga Rabten Palace, once the winter residence of Bhutan's second king, remains preserved nearby. The district's hill villages continue a farming and weaving economy shaped by its mountainous, forested terrain.
