Gelephu Town
Southern Bhutan's emerging gateway city
Gelephu lies on the southern border in Sarpang district, between Phuentsholing to the west and Samdrup Jongkhar to the east, and has long been one of Bhutan's main border markets and road entry points from India.
It is now the site of the Gelephu Mindfulness City, formally the Gelephu Special Administrative Region, a planned economic zone that operates under its own legal framework rather than Bhutan's existing law. It is the largest development project the country has undertaken and is intended to change Gelephu from a border town into an international gateway, with a new airport and rail links proposed as part of it.
