Central Bhutan

Bhutan's spiritual heartland around Bumthang and Trongsa

Central Bhutan is the country's spiritual heartland, centred on the Bumthang valleys, home to some of Bhutan's oldest and most sacred temples, including Jambay Lhakhang and Kurjey Lhakhang, both linked to the 8th-century Buddhist master Guru Rinpoche. Nearby Trongsa holds the ancestral seat of Bhutan's royal family, the imposing Trongsa Dzong, perched above the Mangde River gorge and historically the seat from which Bhutan's first kings governed the country. Further south, Zhemgang's forested hills form part of the Phrumsengla National Park, one of Bhutan's richest wildlife habitats.

For travellers visiting Bhutan from Singapore and beyond, Central Bhutan offers a quieter, culturally deep alternative to the busier western valleys. Bumthang, Trongsa and Zhemgang can be combined into a journey focused on ancient temples, royal history and highland farming villages, while Sarpang, Tsirang and Dagana districts descend into Bhutan's subtropical southern foothills. Whether you are extending a first Bhutan trip beyond Paro and Thimphu or seeking the country's oldest Buddhist sites, Central Bhutan provides a slower, more traditional side of the kingdom.
