Sarpang Town
Bhutan's subtropical southern gateway
Sarpang is the administrative seat of Sarpang district, on Bhutan's southern border with the Indian state of Assam, in the belt of low foothill country that runs along the frontier. The district takes in Gelephu, the larger border town a short distance to the east.
The north south highway from Wangdue Phodrang comes down through Tsirang to reach here, linking the interior to the plain. Sarpang is subtropical rather than Himalayan: hot and humid for much of the year, with paddy and citrus rather than the high pasture and pine most visitors associate with Bhutan.
