Zhemgang District

Remote forested district in central Bhutan

Zhemgang District is one of Bhutan's most densely forested and least-developed districts, home to Royal Manas National Park, Bhutan's oldest protected area and part of a transboundary reserve shared with India's Manas Tiger Reserve. The park protects tigers, elephants and the endangered golden langur, a monkey species found almost nowhere else.

South of Trongsa, Zhemgang's lower elevation and dense forest set it apart from the rest of Central Bhutan.

Culture

People & Culture

Zhemgang is home to the Kheng people, whose villages around the Nabji-Korphu trekking route retain distinct customs and a subsistence farming lifestyle tied closely to the surrounding forest. The district's remoteness and difficult terrain have limited both settlement and tourism, keeping much of its forest cover intact.
