Chendebji Chorten

A large white Nepali-style chorten with painted eyes, built in the 18th century to subdue a demon spirit believed to reside beneath the site.

The chorten was raised in the 18th century by Lama Zhida and modelled on Boudhanath in Kathmandu, which is why the painted eyes look unlike anything in Bhutan's own chorten forms. A larger Bhutanese style chorten was added beside it more recently, and a mani wall runs along the stream below. It sits at the roadside between Trongsa and Rukubji on the east west highway, which makes it the natural stop on a long driving day.
