Trashiyangtse District

Remote eastern district famed for wood-turned crafts

Trashiyangtse District is one of Bhutan's most remote eastern districts, best known for Chorten Kora, a large white stupa modelled on Nepal's Boudhanath and the site of an annual festival drawing pilgrims from both Bhutan and India's Arunachal Pradesh. The district is also nationally recognised for its wood-turning craftsmanship, producing traditional Bhutanese wooden bowls and containers.

North of Trashigang within Eastern Bhutan, Trashiyangtse remains one of the country's least-visited districts.

People & Culture

Trashiyangtse's wood-turning tradition, producing the lacquered wooden bowls known as dapa, remains one of Bhutan's recognised traditional crafts (zorig chusum), passed down through generations of local artisans. Chorten Kora's annual festival is among the few points where the district draws visitors from across the eastern Himalaya.
