Chorten Kora

Chorten Kora stands beside the Kholong Chhu in Trashiyangtse, in Bhutan's far east, and took twelve years to build, finishing around 1740. Lama Ngawang Loday raised it in memory of his uncle Jungshu Phesan and to subdue the spirits of the place.

He modelled it on the great stupa at Boudhanath in Kathmandu, carrying the design home as a carving in a radish. The radish shrank on the journey, which is the traditional explanation for why the two are not quite alike. Two circumambulation festivals are held here each year, Dakpa Kora and Drukpa Kora, and the first draws pilgrims from the Dakpa community across the border in Arunachal Pradesh.
