Pemagatshel District

Small hillside district in eastern Bhutan

Pemagatshel District is a small hillside district in far Eastern Bhutan, centred on Pemagatshel Dzong and rarely included on standard Bhutan itineraries. Its gently rolling hills contrast with the steeper terrain found in much of the rest of Eastern Bhutan.

Bordering Samdrup Jongkhar to the south, Pemagatshel remains one of the least-documented districts in the country for travellers.

Culture

People & Culture

Pemagatshel's Sharchop farming communities cultivate the district's rolling hillsides largely away from tourism, with village life centred on Pemagatshel Dzong and small local monasteries. Its quiet, unhurried character reflects much of rural Eastern Bhutan away from the main highway towns.
