Mongar District

Central-eastern trading town and hill district

Mongar District is a central-eastern trading town and hill district, historically an important stop on the route connecting Bumthang to Trashigang before the east-west highway was fully paved. Mongar Dzong, one of the newer dzongs in Bhutan, and the pilgrimage site of Aja Ney anchor the district.

As the midpoint of Eastern Bhutan's main highway, Mongar remains a practical stopover for travellers making the long overland journey east.

People & Culture

Mongar's population is predominantly Sharchop, and the district's markets and roadside town have grown around its role as a trading and transit centre for Eastern Bhutan. Aja Ney's cave shrine is a lesser-known pilgrimage site associated with Guru Rinpoche, drawing local worshippers rather than large numbers of tourists.
