Pemagatshel Dzong

Pemagatshel Dzong sits on a hill in one of the least visited districts in Bhutan, in the eastern hills among pine forest. It was built in the early 1980s, which makes it very young as dzongs go, and it serves as the administrative and monastic seat of Pemagatshel.

The district tshechu has been held here every year since the dzong was finished. Pemagatshel means lotus grove of bliss. Few foreign visitors come this way: the district sits off the main east west highway, on the road down towards Samdrup Jongkhar and the Assam border, and it is usually seen by travellers making that crossing rather than as a destination of its own.
