Darchula

The Mahakali River canyon and the dramatic Nepal-India-Tibet tri-junction

Darchula is Nepal's far-northwestern corner district, its terrain carved by the Mahakali River canyon near the Nepal-India-Tibet tri-junction area around the Lipulekh pass.

The district borders both India and the Tibet Autonomous Region, making it one of the most geopolitically significant, if least developed, districts in Sudurpashchim Province.

Darchula's remoteness and dramatic canyon terrain have kept tourism development minimal, even by the standards of Nepal's far west.

Culture

People & Culture

Darchula is home to Byansi and other Bhotia communities in its higher valleys, alongside Chhetri and Thakuri populations closer to the district headquarters. Its position at the meeting point of three international borders has historically made it a corridor for cross-border trade, though its remoteness has limited the district's wider tourism development.
