Mahakali River

The Mahakali River (Sharda River in India) forms the entire western border of Nepal with India, flowing from its source in the high Himalayas near Kalapani down through the Darchula gorge to the Terai plains at Banbasa. The river is sacred to Hindus and associated with the goddess Mahakali.The Mahakali offers excellent opportunities for white-water rafting through remote gorges in the far western hills, and the Pancheshwar area — where the Mahakali meets the Sarda — is particularly prized for its rapids and the proposed Pancheshwar Dam site that has been under discussion for decades.
