Wangdue Phodrang District

Gateway to central Bhutan's highlands

Wangdue Phodrang District sits just beyond Punakha, serving as the gateway from Western Bhutan into the central highlands. The district holds Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, rebuilt after a 2012 fire, and the wide, glacial Phobjikha Valley (Gangtey), one of the last winter homes of the endangered black-necked crane.

As the last district before the road climbs toward Central Bhutan, Wangdue Phodrang marks the point where most Bhutan itineraries transition from the well-visited west to the country's quieter interior.

People & Culture

Phobjikha Valley's farming communities have adapted their land use around the annual arrival of black-necked cranes, considered sacred in Bhutanese Buddhism, and the valley hosts a Crane Festival each November celebrating their return. Wangdue town itself has long served as a market and administrative centre linking Bhutan's west to its central districts.
