Haa District

Remote, scenic valley opened to tourism in 2002

Haa District is a remote, narrow valley in far Western Bhutan that remained closed to tourists until 2002, later than almost anywhere else in the country. Its main sites, the twin temples of Lhakhang Karpo (White Temple) and Lhakhang Nagpo (Black Temple), and Haa Dzong, sit in a valley still shaped more by farming than by tourism.

A scenic but longer drive from Paro over the Chele La Pass, Haa remains one of the least-visited valleys in Western Bhutan.

Culture

People & Culture

Haa's late opening to tourism has preserved a farming way of life closer to Bhutan's pre-tourism past than in Paro or Thimphu, with the valley's twin temples remaining active sites of local worship rather than major visitor attractions. The district's high-altitude pastures also support semi-nomadic yak herding, a tradition increasingly rare elsewhere in Western Bhutan.
