Gasa District

Bhutan's least populous, high-Himalayan district

Gasa District is Bhutan's least populous and most mountainous district, stretching north to the Tibet border and reaching some of the highest inhabited villages in the country. Gasa Dzong guards the valley, while the Gasa Tshachu hot springs are considered among Bhutan's most therapeutic and draw visitors from across the country.

Beyond Gasa town, the district borders the high-altitude trekking routes toward Laya, one of the highest permanently inhabited villages in Bhutan, reachable only on foot.

People & Culture

Laya Village's community, the semi-nomadic Layap people, are one of Bhutan's most visually distinct groups, known for the pointed bamboo hats worn by Layap women, a tradition found nowhere else in the country. Gasa's remoteness and high altitude have kept both Layap culture and the district's yak-herding economy largely intact.
