Gasa Dzong

Gasa Dzong, properly Tashi Thongmon Dzong, was built in 1646 by Tenzin Drukdra, the second Druk Desi, on the site of a 13th century meditation retreat founded by Drubthob Terkungpa. It was raised as a bulwark against invasion from the north and took its present name in 1648, after the protective deity Tashi Thongmon.

Unusually among Bhutan's dzongs it is round rather than rectangular, following the shape of the ridge it stands on. Fire badly damaged it in January 2008 and took ten hours to bring under control; it has been restored since. Gasa is the trailhead for the Laya Gasa trek and for the hot springs below the dzong.
