In short

December in Bhutan is cold, dry and clear. Days in Paro and Thimphu reach about 15 to 17°C and nights drop to around freezing, while Punakha stays milder. It rarely snows in the valleys, but the high passes often turn white, the Himalaya is at its clearest, and the Druk Wangyel Tshechu fills Dochula Pass on 13 December. With Singapore's school holidays running from 21 November to 31 December, it is one of the easiest months to fit a family trip in.

Bhutan weather in December

Bhutan's valleys sit at very different heights, so December feels different in each. These are the long-term averages from the National Center for Hydrology and Meteorology, Bhutan's weather service, in its Climate Data Book:

PlaceHeightDayNightRain in December
Punakhaabout 1,240 m20°C7°Cabout 4 mm
Thimphuabout 2,300 m17°C-1°Cabout 4 mm
Paroabout 2,400 m15°C0°Cabout 3 mm
Bumthang (Jakar)about 2,470 m13°C-3°Cabout 2 mm

Averages for 1990 to 2017 from the NCHM Climate Data Book of Bhutan (2018), as shown for Thimphu, Paro, Punakha and Jakar. December is one of the driest months of the year: a few millimetres of rain in the whole month, against more than 100 mm a month in the monsoon.

Did you know? Punakha is about a thousand metres lower than Thimphu and around five degrees warmer, day and night. On a December trip it is often the one place where a light jacket is enough at lunchtime.

For someone coming from Singapore, the gap between day and night is the thing to plan for. A sunny noon in Paro can feel like a cool spring day, and by 6 pm it is close to freezing. Hotels heat their rooms, so you feel the cold mostly outdoors in the early morning and after dark.

Days are short. In Paro the sun rises at about 06:40 and sets at about 17:10 through December, roughly ten and a half hours of daylight (times worked out with the NOAA solar calculator method), and in the deeper valleys the sun clears the ridges later still. Guides start sightseeing early so the best light is not wasted.

Does it snow in Bhutan in December?

In the valleys, rarely, and Bhutan's own tourism department is clear about it:

“Although it rarely snows in Thimphu and Paro, it is advised to carry warm clothing.”

Department of Tourism, Bhutan, on travelling in winter

Snow is much more likely on the high road passes: Dochula at about 3,100 metres on the way from Thimphu to Punakha, and Pele La at 3,420 metres on the road into central Bhutan. A snowy morning at Dochula, with the 108 chortens dusted white and the peaks clear behind them, is one of the best sights of a winter trip.

Fresh snow can slow traffic on a pass or hold it up for a few hours while the road is cleared, so December itineraries leave some slack on the days that cross them. The far east is different: Thrumshing La on the road to eastern Bhutan is often closed by snow in winter. HSJ Travel's Bhutan trips stay in the west and centre of the country, where winter roads normally stay open.

Druk Wangyel Tshechu

Held every year on 13 December at Dochula, about 3,100 metres up on the road from Thimphu to Punakha. The masked dances are performed by the Royal Bhutan Army rather than monks, with the high Himalaya behind on a clear day. It is cold on the pass even in the midday sun, so dress in layers.

Bhutan festivals in December 2026

Winter is festival season in Bhutan. The Department of Tourism's tentative festival calendar for 2026 lists these for December 2026:

Planning around a festival

Tshechu dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar and can move, so confirm them before you book. National Day, 17 December, is a public holiday marking the crowning of Bhutan's first king in 1907 (National Day of Bhutan); offices and many shops close for the day.

The Druk Wangyel Tshechu is the one most travellers from Singapore can reach, as Dochula is on the main road from Thimphu to Punakha. Our guides to the Chhukha Tshechu and the Royal Highland Festival show how a festival trip comes together.

At any tshechu, dress modestly, keep to the edge of the dance ground, and ask before taking close-up photos of people.

Black-necked cranes in Phobjikha

Winter is crane season in the Phobjikha valley. The endangered black-necked cranes fly in from the Tibetan plateau in autumn and spend the winter feeding in the valley's wetlands. Bhutan's Department of Tourism says they typically arrive in mid-November and stay until the end of February.

The 2024-25 winter count found a record 709 cranes in Bhutan, 640 of them in Phobjikha (Kuensel, via Asia News Network). December is a reliable month to see them, best in the early morning and late afternoon. The 7-day and 9-day HSJ Travel trips both spend a night in Phobjikha.

Bhutan in the Singapore year-end school holidays

Singapore's primary and secondary schools break up on 20 November 2026 and the year-end holidays run from Saturday 21 November to Thursday 31 December (Ministry of Education). Junior colleges finish a week later, on 27 November. That gives six weeks to choose from, and Christmas Day falls on a Friday.

Drukair's December 2026 timetable keeps the usual pattern: Changi to Paro on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 12:30, and back on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 07:50. Seats around the school holidays go early, so hold the flights before anything else. Our Singapore to Bhutan flights guide has the full timetable, check-in and baggage details.

Travel tip: Christmas is on a Friday in 2026, so the 5-day trip from Thursday 24 to Monday 28 December uses only two days of annual leave.

What to do in Bhutan in December

December suits sightseeing at an easy pace. The dzongs and temples are open as usual, Punakha Dzong is at its most comfortable in the milder Punakha valley, and the hike to Tiger’s Nest is open all winter.

It is also the best season for a dotsho, the traditional hot stone bath: river stones heated in a fire and dropped into a wooden tub, often with herbs. Many hotels and farmhouses offer one in the evening for a small extra charge.

Long, high-altitude treks are not run in mid-winter because of snow and cold at the camps, but day hikes and gentle walks in the lower valleys are fine.

What to pack for Bhutan in December

  • Layers: a thermal top, a fleece and a warm down or padded jacket for mornings and evenings
  • For your head and hands: a beanie and gloves, especially for Dochula and Phobjikha
  • Shoes: comfortable walking shoes with good grip for the hike to Tiger’s Nest, which stays open all winter
  • For the dry air and strong sun: lip balm, moisturiser, sunscreen and sunglasses
  • For dzongs and temples: long sleeves and long trousers or a long skirt

Pack as you would for a cool autumn city break rather than a ski trip. The sun is warm in the middle of the day, so you will take layers off as often as you put them on.

Is December a good time to visit Bhutan?

For most travellers from Singapore, yes. The skies are at their clearest, rain is almost unknown, the cranes are in Phobjikha and there is a festival at Dochula. It is low season, usually quieter than the October and November peak, and our December departures include some of the year's lower prices. The trade-offs are cold mornings and nights, shorter days, and a little uncertainty on the high passes after fresh snow. If you want warm days and green valleys, spring (March to May) suits you better; if you want views and quiet, December is hard to beat.
