Singapore Flyer
A 165 metre observation wheel with 30 minute rides over Marina Bay
Singapore Flyer is a 165 metre observation wheel on the eastern edge of Marina Bay, at 30 Raffles Avenue in Singapore's Downtown Core. Ground was broken in September 2005 and the wheel was officially launched in 2008. Designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa with DP Architects, it stands about as tall as a 42-storey building, measures about 150 metres across and carries 28 air-conditioned capsules, each about the size of a bus and holding up to 28 passengers.
One rotation takes about 30 minutes at a slow 0.76 kilometres an hour. Passengers board from level platforms through two synchronised doors, which the operator notes makes boarding easier for older visitors and wheelchair users. On a clear day the view reaches about 45 kilometres, taking in the Marina Bay skyline, Gardens by the Bay and, according to the operator, Changi Airport, Sentosa and parts of Malaysia and Indonesia. The terminal building at the base has shops and food outlets, and a multi-storey car park with 284 lots. The Flyer opens daily from 10am to 10pm, with last admission at 9.30pm, but the wheel sits beside the Marina Bay Street Circuit and closes on Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix race days, and rides have been paused at times for safety inspections, so check the official site for the day you plan to go.
