Rajbiraj

Rajbiraj is the administrative headquarters of Saptari District in the Madhesh Province of Nepal. Situated in the eastern Terai plains, the city is a vibrant center of Maithili culture, commerce, and local governance.The city hosts colourful festivals, traditional markets, and serves as a gateway to the eastern Terai's natural and cultural attractions.

Rajbiraj was laid out on a grid in the 1930s, which makes it one of the earliest planned towns in Nepal and is still visible in the straightness of its streets. It has its own airport with flights from Kathmandu, and Koshi Tappu, the best birding site in the country, lies about an hour west, which is the main reason a visitor comes this way at all.
