Ancient Buddhist kingdom of the Shakya clan
Kapilvastu District is the historical heartland of the ancient Shakya kingdom, the clan into which Siddhartha Gautama was born. The district contains numerous archaeological sites, stupas, and ruins associated with the life and family of the Buddha, forming part of the larger Buddhist pilgrimage circuit of the Lumbini zone.Key sites include Kudan (where the Buddha is said to have returned to meet his father), Niglihawa (containing an Ashoka pillar inscription), and Sagarhawa (site of the Shakya massacre).
