Nepal's largest Terai national park, home to its second-largest tiger population
Bardiya National Park is the largest national park in Nepal's Terai lowlands, bordered by the Karnali River to the west and the Babai River running through its core. It holds Nepal's second-largest population of wild Bengal tigers alongside reintroduced greater one-horned rhinos, wild elephants and Gangetic dolphins. Together with the neighbouring Banke National Park, it forms the connected Western Terai Complex, one continuous wildlife corridor across both districts.
The park covers 968 square kilometres and was gazetted in 1988, having been set aside as a wildlife reserve in 1976. Nepal's 2022 tiger census counted around 125 tigers here, and Bardiya is now the country's most reliable place to look for one on foot rather than from a vehicle. Access is a flight to Nepalgunj and about three hours by road, and February to May gives the clearest sightings.
