Lo Manthang
Ancient walled capital of the forbidden Kingdom of Lo
Lo Manthang is the ancient walled capital of the former Kingdom of Mustang (Lo), one of Nepal's most remote and culturally intact Himalayan kingdoms. The medieval walled city, located in the high-altitude Tibetan plateau landscape of Upper Mustang, contains the royal palace, four ancient gompas, and centuries-old frescoes of immense art-historical significance.Access to Upper Mustang requires a special restricted area permit, which has preserved its Tibetan Buddhist culture, architecture, and way of life almost untouched. Lo Manthang is one of the last places on earth where the culture of pre-Buddhist Tibet survives in living form.
