2,060m viewpoint above Kande, named for the Australian trekkers who once rested there
Australian Camp (2,060m) is a viewpoint ridge reached by a short hike from Kande or Phedi, through rhododendron forest and Gurung villages including Pothana and Dhampus, opening onto Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Lamjung Himal. It takes its name from the Australian trekkers who used it as a resting point in the region's early trekking days.
The walk up from Kande takes an hour to an hour and a half, which makes this the shortest trek in Nepal that still delivers a full mountain skyline, and it is the usual answer for anyone in Pokhara with a single spare day. It began as a campsite and is now a row of lodges on open meadow, so it fills at weekends with Nepali visitors as well as trekkers. Dhampus is an hour along the ridge, and Lakeside forty minutes by road from the trailhead.
