Gosaikunda
Sacred alpine lake at 4,380 metres
Gosaikunda is a high-altitude glacial lake in Rasuwa District, sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists and one of Nepal's most revered pilgrimage destinations. Situated at an elevation of 4,380 metres, the lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and is believed to have been created by Lord Shiva thrusting his trident into the earth.Every year during the Janai Purnima (Raksha Bandhan) full moon festival, tens of thousands of pilgrims trek to the lake for a holy dip, making it one of Nepal's most extraordinary religious spectacles.
