Samdrup Jongkhar Town
Bhutan's southeastern border gateway
Samdrup Jongkhar sits at the south eastern corner of Bhutan, on the border with Assam, and is the country's only other land crossing open to foreign nationals besides Phuentsholing. The Indian side of the checkpoint is Darranga.
For travellers it matters mostly as an exit: eastern Bhutan has no airport of consequence, so a trip that runs Paro to Trashigang usually leaves this way and flies out of Guwahati, a few hours across the plain. The town itself is small, hot and workmanlike, on the flat at the foot of the hills, and the road north to Trashigang climbs steeply out of it.
