Daga Dzong
Remote fortress of the southwest hills
Daga Dzong, in Dagana in Bhutan's south west, was built in 1651 by Druk Namgyel on the order of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Its job was to hold the southern approaches against the states below, in what is now Assam and West Bengal, and it sits on a hilltop with terraced fields falling away beneath it.
It remains the administrative and monastic seat of Dagana district. This is one of the quieter corners of the country: the roads in are slow, there is no through route to anywhere a visitor is usually heading, and almost all the people who come are Bhutanese rather than foreign.
