Jambay Lhakhang

Believed to be one of 108 temples built in a single day by Tibetan King Songtsen Gampo in the 7th century; home to the annual Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival with its fire ritual.

The Jambay Lhakhang Drup falls in October or November and is the festival most visitors to Bumthang time a trip around. Two things set it apart: the mewang, when crowds run beneath a burning gate of dry grass to be purified, and the tercham, a masked dance performed naked at midnight, which is not photographed. No ticket is needed, but permission and restraint are expected. It stands a short distance from Kurjey Lhakhang, below Jakar Dzong.
