Tibet's greenest prefecture, forested valleys and canyons

Nyingchi is Tibet's lowest and greenest prefecture, where the Yarlung Tsangpo carves the Yarlung Tsangpo Grand Canyon before crossing into India. Forested valleys, a noticeably milder climate, and a mix of Tibetan, Monpa and Lhoba communities set it apart from the high, dry plateau further west. At its lowest points Nyingchi drops to around 3,000m, considerably lower than Lhasa or Shigatse, which makes it a genuinely comfortable stop for travellers still adjusting to altitude. The prefecture's peach blossom season each spring has become a major local festival, drawing visitors to the wild orchards around Nyingchi city when the valleys turn pink for a few weeks each year.

Nyingchi is also Tibet's most ethnically mixed prefecture, home to Monpa and Lhoba communities alongside the Tibetan majority, smaller ethnic groups with their own language and dress, concentrated in the prefecture's southern valleys near the Indian border. The region's peach blossom season each spring has become a genuine local festival, celebrated around the wild peach orchards near Nyingchi city.

Moisture carried up from the Indian Ocean gives Nyingchi forested valleys and a noticeably milder climate than the rest of the plateau, closer to alpine Southwest China than the high Tibetan desert further west.

Things to Do

Basum Lake (Draksum-tso), a forested glacier-fed lake with a small island monastery, is Nyingchi's best-known single site. The prefecture rewards a slower visit than the rest of Tibet, its appeal is landscape and season (peach blossoms in spring, autumn colour later in the year) rather than a single monument.
