Chamdo

Remote eastern Tibet, where the Mekong's source rivers meet

Chamdo is Tibet's easternmost prefecture, mountainous and forested where the plateau begins dropping toward Sichuan and Yunnan. It belongs to the Kham cultural region of eastern Tibet, distinct in dialect and dress from central Tibet, and remains the least-visited prefecture on standard tourist itineraries. The Ngom Chu and Za Chu rivers meet here to form the Mekong, one of Asia's great rivers, which continues on through Yunnan and Southeast Asia. Chamdo's isolation from Lhasa, and its closer trade and travel links east toward Sichuan, mean it developed with a noticeably different character from the rest of the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Chamdo is Tibet's least-visited prefecture on standard tourist itineraries, none of HSJ's current Tibet tours route through it, and tourist infrastructure is limited compared to central and western Tibet. The river confluence where the Mekong is formed is the region's most accessible point of interest for travellers passing through.
