Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve
North-west coast mangrove reserve and Singapore's first ASEAN Heritage Park
Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve is a 202-hectare mangrove and wetland reserve on Singapore's north-west coast, reached from Kranji Way in Lim Chu Kang, and was named Singapore's first ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003. Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong opened it as the 87-hectare Sungei Buloh Nature Park on 6 December 1993; the site was gazetted as a nature reserve on 1 January 2002 and took its present name on 20 April 2002, with an extension completed in 2014.
NParks gives August to April as the migratory season, when flocks of shorebirds such as Whimbrels and Common Redshanks arrive. Routes include the Mangrove Boardwalk, the Migratory Bird Trail and the Coastal Trail with its viewing pods, plus Eagle Point, a lookout for raptors, and the 18-metre Aerie Tower. Some low-lying areas close during very high tides, so NParks publishes closure dates. The reserve opens daily from 7am to 7pm, with last entry at 6.30pm, and jogging, cycling and pets are not allowed.
From Kranji MRT station, bus 925 runs to the reserve from Monday to Saturday and bus 925M on Sundays and public holidays. The Visitor Centre at 60 Kranji Way and the Wetland Centre both have free parking.
