MacRitchie Reservoir is Singapore's first reservoir, developed in 1868 off Lornie Road in URA's Central Water Catchment planning area and named in 1922 after James MacRitchie, the Municipal Engineer who oversaw its construction. The forest around it is part of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Singapore's largest nature reserve, with more than 2,000 hectares of forest and over 20 kilometres of trails. The reservoir's water intake tower and bridge were given conservation status on 3 December 2009.

The best-known walk leads to the HSBC TreeTop Walk, a 250-metre freestanding suspension bridge, 25 metres high, that links the two highest points in MacRitchie. NParks Route 3 makes a 10.3-kilometre loop from MacRitchie Reservoir Park across the bridge and back, while Route 6 reaches it on a 7-kilometre loop from Windsor Nature Park. The reserve is open daily from 7am to 7pm, but the TreeTop Walk keeps shorter hours: 9am to 5pm from Tuesday to Friday and 8.30am to 5pm at weekends and on public holidays, with last entry at 4.45pm, and it is closed on Mondays except public holidays. The Casuarina Entrance and the Cyathea boardwalk trail are closed for maintenance from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027.

At 10.3 kilometres and graded moderate to difficult by NParks, Route 3 is a useful practice day for anyone preparing for a Himalayan trek.
