Chek Jawa Wetlands
100-hectare intertidal wetland on Pulau Ubin with boardwalks and a 21m tower
View all 2 photos
Chek Jawa Wetlands is a 100-hectare intertidal wetland at the eastern end of Pulau Ubin, in the North-Eastern Islands planning area, where six ecosystems meet: sandy beach, rocky beach, seagrass lagoon, coral rubble, mangroves and coastal forest. The area had been due for reclamation, but on 20 December 2001 the Ministry of National Development announced it would defer the works. Boardwalks, the 21-metre Jejawi Tower and a visitor centre with a viewing jetty were added later.
Two boardwalk loops cross the site, the Coastal Loop of 600m and the Mangrove Loop of 500m. From 15 September 2026, sections of the Coastal Loop are closed for maintenance, with completion expected on 30 April 2027; the Mangrove Loop and the open part of the Coastal Loop remain accessible. The guided Chek Jawa Wetlands Tour is suspended until further notice because of maintenance works on the floating pontoon. The boardwalks, Jejawi Tower and visitor centre are open daily from 7am to 7pm.
Because Chek Jawa is intertidal, its flats are exposed only at low tides of 0.5 metres and below, so check the tide table before going. The walk from the Ubin jetty takes about 40 minutes, or you can cycle or hire a van from the village.
