Changi Village
Seaside village with a 1975 hawker centre and bumboats to Pulau Ubin
Changi Village is a seaside neighbourhood at the north-eastern tip of Singapore, around Changi Village Road and Lorong Bekukong in the Changi planning area. A settlement grew up from 1927 beside the British military camps at Changi to serve soldiers and their families, and after the war it was a shopping and leisure spot for British troops. Britain's plan to withdraw its forces by 1972 left the village struggling, and from 1973 the government developed Changi Point as a recreation area, with a housing estate, market and hawker centre. Changi Village Hawker Centre at Blocks 2 and 3 Changi Village Road opened in 1975, and by 1976 it had 74 cooked food stalls and 78 market stalls.
The hawker centre is known above all for nasi lemak, the Malay dish of coconut rice, and closed for ten months of upgrading in 2012. A short walk away, Changi Point Ferry Terminal at 51 Lorong Bekukong is where bumboats leave for Pulau Ubin, generally between 6am and 7pm and once 12 passengers have boarded, for a crossing of about 10 minutes. The Changi Point Coastal Walk, along the Changi Boardwalk, starts beside the ferry terminal and runs about 2.2 km westwards along the shore in six sections, from Creek Walk to Sunset Walk. Buses 2, 29, 59 and 109 end at Changi Village Bus Terminal; bus 59 runs from Tampines East MRT station and bus 2 from Tanah Merah.
