Gaur is the administrative headquarters of Rautahat District in the Madhesh Province of Nepal. It is a culturally rich town situated in the fertile Terai plains, known for its traditional Madhesi customs and festivals.The town hosts several ancient temples and serves as a center for local governance, agriculture, and trade in the region.
Gaur sits within a couple of kilometres of the Indian border, with a crossing into Bihar, and that closeness is what the town's trade runs on. It lies east of Birgunj on the flat sugarcane and paddy land between the Bagmati and the Lalbakeya. Most travellers pass through rather than stop.
