Nijgadh
Gateway city to Madhesh Province
Nijgadh is a rapidly developing city in Bara District, located along the Mahendra Highway in the Terai plains of Nepal. It is known as a major transit hub connecting the hills to the Indian border.The city is the planned site of Nepal's international airport project and is emerging as a key commercial center in the Madhesh region.
The airport proposal is not settled. In 2022 Nepal's Supreme Court ordered the plan scrapped in the form it had reached, on the scale of forest clearance it required, and a smaller footprint has been sought since. Nijgadh is also the southern end of the Kathmandu expressway under construction, which when finished will put it about an hour from the capital.
