Makalu Base Camp (4,870 m) lies in the heart of the Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area — one of Nepal's most biodiverse protected regions. The trek from Num village through the dramatic Arun and Barun river gorges is considered one of the most challenging and rewarding in Nepal, passing through ancient forests of rhododendron, magnolia, and bamboo. Makalu (8,485 m), the fifth-highest mountain in the world, dominates the skyline with its perfect four-sided pyramid shape. The park is also renowned for snow leopard habitat, red panda sightings, and rare orchid species.
