Reiek Heritage Village

Reiek Heritage Village is a recreated traditional Mizo village below Reiek peak in the Mamit district of Mizoram, about 29 km west of Aizawl. Reiek Heritage Village was built by the state to show how Mizo communities lived before the 20th century, with bamboo and timber houses on stilts representing the homes of the chief, a widow, a commoner and other village members.

At the centre stands the zawlbuk, the bachelors' dormitory where the young men of a village once slept, trained and kept watch; it was the core of village life until the custom faded after Christianity spread through the Mizo hills from the 1890s. Reiek has hosted cultural events such as the Anthurium Festival, which celebrates the flower grown widely around the village. Above the village, Reiek peak rises to about 1,500 m, and a forest trail leads to rocky viewpoints over the ridges of western Mizoram, and on clear days towards the plains of Bangladesh.

What to wear

Mizoram's hills are mild. Bring layers, as the ridge at Reiek is windy and cool in the evening, and a rain jacket from May to September. Wear walking shoes with good grip for the trail to the peak, which is steep and slippery in places. Dress modestly; Mizoram is a conservative Christian state and many things close on Sunday. The traditional Mizo dress for women is the puan, a woven wrap skirt, and the puanchei, the colourful striped version worn at festivals and for the Cheraw bamboo dance.

Local food to try

Mizo food is mild and simple. Try bai, a stew of greens, pork and bamboo shoot, vawksa rep, smoked pork, and sawhchiar, a rice porridge with chicken or pork. Snacks and tea are available at Reiek, but for proper meals head back to Aizawl, where Bara Bazar and the local restaurants serve Mizo dishes alongside Indian and Chinese food. Vegetarian meals are available on request.

Reiek Heritage Village is an easy half-day trip from Aizawl, where the great white church of Solomon's Temple stands on the city's edge. Vantawng Falls, the highest waterfall in Mizoram, lies much further south, and Unakoti in neighbouring Tripura is a long day's drive to the north-west.
