Centenary Farmers Market

The Centenary Farmers Market opened in 2008 on the bank of the Wang Chhu, a short walk below Thimphu's main town, and is the largest farmers' market in Bhutan. Its two storeys hold around 400 stalls, with imported goods on the ground floor and Bhutanese produce above, divided into sections for vegetables, fruit, dried meat, dairy and flowers.

It is busiest from Thursday to Sunday, when growers come in from across the country, which is why it is still widely called the Sunday market. Datshi, the soft local cheese that goes into ema datshi, and dried chillies sold by the sackful are what most visitors notice first.
