Samtse Town
Southwestern border district hub
Samtse is the seat of Samtse district, in the far south west of Bhutan on the border with West Bengal. It is the westernmost of the southern border districts, lying below Haa and Chukha on the flat rather than in the hills.
The district is among the most populous in the country and one of the most agricultural, growing cardamom, oranges and areca nut on the foothill slopes above the town. It is also home to one of Bhutan's teaching colleges. Samtse is not on the standard visitor route: the crossings open to foreign nationals are at Phuentsholing and Samdrup Jongkhar, not here.
