Samtse District

Southwestern border district, densely populated

Samtse District is Bhutan's densely populated southwestern border district, its low-lying plains bordering India and its climate more subtropical than the highland valleys of Western Bhutan further north. Samtse town anchors a district shaped by cross-border trade and agriculture rather than monastic heritage.

Bhutan's only Southern Bhutan district, Samtse is rarely visited by international travellers, most of whom stay in the higher-altitude regions further north.

Culture

People & Culture

Samtse's population includes a significant Lhotshampa (ethnic Nepali) community, and the district's farming economy and cross-border trade with India give it a character distinct from Bhutan's Buddhist highland valleys. It remains one of the least-visited districts in the country for tourism.
