Gom Kora

Gom Kora, also written Gomphu Kora, sits on the bank of the Drangme Chhu about 24km by road from Trashigang. The name joins gomphu, a meditation cave, to kora, the act of walking around a sacred place, and both are the point of coming here.

Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated in the cave beneath the temple and to have subdued a demon that had taken the form of a black rock, leaving impressions in the stone that pilgrims still trace by hand. The two storey temple above the rock was built in the 17th century by Minjur Tempa and its murals date from that time. The spring festival here draws pilgrims from both sides of the Indian border.
