Khoma Village

Khoma is a small village in Lhuentse, in Bhutan's north east, and is the home of kishuthara, the silk brocade that is the most prized and most expensive textile woven in the country. Nearly every household here weaves, and the looms are usually set up on the ground floor or the porch, in plain view of the lane.

A single kishuthara kira can take a weaver the better part of a year, the pattern carried in memory rather than written down, which is why the finished cloth costs what it does. Visitors are generally welcome to watch and to buy directly. The village sits a short drive from Lhuentse Dzong.
