Ogyen Choling Palace Museum

Ogyen Choling sits above the Tang valley, about an hour's drive from Jakar in Bumthang. The site's standing comes from Dorji Lingpa, the 14th century treasure revealer and Nyingma master, whose descendants have held it ever since; the present manor house was built by Tsokye Dorji, his fifteenth descendant.

The family opened it in 2001 as Bhutan's first private museum, and it is still run by them through their own foundation. Rooms are laid out as they were rather than as exhibits: the kitchen, the granary, the master's quarters, festival costumes and masks, weapons, armour and household baskets. It is the clearest picture in the country of how a landed Bhutanese family actually lived.
