Rongbuk Monastery was founded in 1902 at 4,980 metres in the Rongbuk valley, on the north side of Mount Everest. Destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and rebuilt from 1983, it is the last settlement before the mountain, and its chortens frame one of the clearest views of the North Face. Visitors to the Tibet side of Everest stay in this area.
