Pelkor Chode Monastery and Kumbum

Gyantse's monastery and its nine-tiered Kumbum stupa of painted chapels.

Pelkor Chode, also called Palcho Monastery, stands in Gyantse, where its main temple was built between 1418 and 1425. Beside it rises the Kumbum, a nine-tiered stupa 32 metres tall built from 1427 to 1437, the largest of Tibet's three kumbums, with dozens of small chapels of murals and statues as you climb.
