Sera Monastery

Lhasa's monastery of the debating monks, beneath the hills north of the city.

Sera Monastery was founded in 1419 by Jamchen Choje, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, on the northern edge of Lhasa. It is best known for monastic debate: in its courtyard monks question one another on Buddhist philosophy, punctuating each point with a sharp clap. Afternoon debate is the session most visitors see.
